Wedding announcement wording: how to say 'we're married' on a card
A wedding announcement is sent after the wedding, to people who were not there. It is not an invitation and it asks for nothing. It simply says: we married, here is when and where, and we wanted you to know.
Announcements are the right choice after an elopement, a small ceremony, a destination wedding, or any wedding where the guest list was shorter than the list of people you love. Below is what to include and wording you can use as is.
What to include
- Both names, in full for a formal card or first names for a casual one.
- The date of the wedding, and usually the city or the venue.
- Who is announcing. Traditionally the parents; today most couples announce for themselves.
- Optional: a new shared name, a new address, or a line about a celebration to come.
Formal
Traditional wording is in the third person, announced by the parents or by the couple. These lines suit a foil design on a dark card.

Elopements and small ceremonies
An elopement announcement often carries one extra line: that it was small on purpose, and that a party may follow. Only promise a party you are planning.

When to send, and to whom
Announcements are usually mailed within a few weeks of the wedding, and the day after is traditional. Later is fine too; the news keeps.
Send one to anyone who would have been invited to a larger wedding: relatives, old friends, colleagues, and anyone your parents would like to tell. An announcement does not obligate a gift, and etiquette says it should not look like it is asking for one, so leave registries off.
Our wedding cards come in sets of 25 to 150 with white envelopes included. Every order gets a free digital proof first, so you can check the date and the spelling of every name before anything prints. Order about three weeks ahead of when you want them in the mail.
