Pregnancy announcement wording: how to share the news by mail

A pregnancy announcement by mail is a small event in itself. It lands in a mailbox instead of a feed, it gets opened at the kitchen table, and it gets kept. The wording can be as short as four words.

Here is what to put on the card, and a set of lines you can copy. On our pregnancy cards you give us the wording, the due date, and your names, and we set the type for your proof.

What to include

  • The news itself, in your own words: 'We're expecting', 'Baby on the way', 'Plus one'.
  • When. A month and a year is enough; most people do not print an exact due date, since babies ignore them.
  • Who. Your names, or your family name, or 'the Bennetts' if an older child is part of the announcement.
  • Optional: whether it is a boy or a girl, if you know and want to say.

That is all. A pregnancy card is the one announcement where less wording is almost always better.

When to send

Most families mail the card after the first trimester, often once the closest people have heard by phone. There is no rule, only what feels right to you.

Our cards are made to order in sets of 25 to 150 with white envelopes included, and every order gets a free digital proof before anything prints. If you want the cards by a specific weekend, order about three weeks ahead, four in December.
